Drop a file.
We handle the rest.
Convert, compress, resize, trim — 142 formats, entirely in your browser. No uploads. No accounts. No nonsense.
How FileDex Works
-
Drop your file
Drag any file onto FileDex or tap to browse. FileDex reads the magic bytes in the file header to detect the exact format — no guessing from the extension.
-
Choose what to do
FileDex shows only the operations that make sense for your file type. Convert, compress, resize, trim, merge, or edit — with optimal defaults pre-set.
-
Download instantly
Your file is processed entirely in your browser using WebAssembly engines. Nothing is uploaded. The result downloads straight to your device.
Why Local Processing Matters
Most file converters upload your documents to remote servers for processing. Your PDFs, photos, and videos pass through third-party infrastructure before returning to you. FileDex takes a fundamentally different approach: every operation runs directly in your browser through WebAssembly — the same technology major browsers use for near-native performance. Your files never leave your device. There is no server, no cloud storage, no account, and no file size data collected. This architecture is verifiable: open your browser's network tab during any conversion and confirm that zero file data is transmitted. FileDex is free, with no usage limits and no registration required.
142 File Formats
Every format documented with forensic-grade technical depth — magic bytes, CLI commands, security profiles, and conversion paths.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is FileDex really free?
FileDex is completely free with no usage limits, no daily conversion caps, and no premium tiers. Every feature — converting, compressing, resizing, trimming, and merging — works without creating an account or providing an email address. The project earns no revenue from user data because no user data is collected. FileDex processes files locally using WebAssembly, so there are no server costs for file handling.
Does FileDex upload my files to a server?
No. FileDex processes every file entirely in your browser. When you drop a file, your browser loads it into local memory, processes it using WebAssembly engines (FFmpeg for video and audio, pdf-lib for PDF, Canvas API for images), and produces the output on your device. No network request carrying file data is ever made. You can verify this by opening your browser's Developer Tools → Network tab during any conversion.
What file formats does FileDex support?
FileDex supports 142 file formats across six categories: video (MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI, MKV), image (PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, AVIF), audio (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC), document (PDF), archive, and system formats. Each format has a dedicated encyclopedia page with technical specifications, conversion paths, CLI commands, and security profiles. Convertible formats can be processed directly in the browser. Non-convertible formats include reference documentation with recommended external tools.
Does FileDex work on mobile phones?
Yes. FileDex works on any modern mobile browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge — on both Android and iOS. On mobile, tap the drop zone to open your device's file picker. All processing happens locally on your phone's processor. Large video files may take longer on mobile due to processor speed, and FileDex will warn you if battery is below 15% before starting a heavy conversion.
How is FileDex different from CloudConvert or Convertio?
CloudConvert and Convertio upload your files to remote servers for processing, then return the result. FileDex processes everything locally in your browser — your files never leave your device. This means no file size limits imposed by server infrastructure, no daily conversion caps, no account required, and complete privacy. The tradeoff: FileDex supports fewer format conversions than server-based tools because browser-side WebAssembly cannot run every codec. For formats FileDex can convert, the result is identical quality with zero privacy cost.
