What FileDex Is

FileDex is a free, browser-based tool that lets you convert, compress, and inspect files directly in your web browser. It also provides a format encyclopedia with technical information about file formats. All file processing happens locally on your device — your files are never uploaded to our servers.

Your Files, Your Responsibility

You own your files. FileDex does not claim any rights, ownership, or license over the files you process. We never see, access, or store your files.

You are responsible for your files. You are responsible for:

• Ensuring you have the right to process the files you use with FileDex (e.g., you own them or have permission)
• Maintaining your own backups before processing. While FileDex is designed to work reliably, file conversion involves complex processing and results cannot be guaranteed
• Complying with applicable laws regarding the content of your files

Service Provided "As Is"

FileDex is provided on an "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied.

We do not warrant that:

• The service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at all times
• Conversion results will be accurate, complete, or suitable for any particular purpose
• The service will meet your specific requirements
• Any defects in the service will be corrected within a specific timeframe

To the extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

Practical note: File conversion is inherently complex. Different browsers, devices, and file variations can produce different results. Always verify your output files before relying on them for important purposes.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we shall not be liable for any:

• Loss of data, files, or content resulting from use of FileDex
• Indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages
• Damages arising from the inability to use the service
• Damages arising from conversion errors, quality loss, or file corruption
• Loss of profits or business interruption

Since all processing happens locally in your browser, we have no control over the hardware, operating system, browser version, or available memory on your device — all of which can affect conversion results.

Our total liability for any claim related to the service shall not exceed the amount you paid for the service (which is zero, as FileDex is free).

Format Encyclopedia Content

The format encyclopedia provides technical information about file formats for educational and reference purposes. While we strive for accuracy and cite authoritative sources (RFCs, ISO standards, W3C specifications), we do not warrant that all information is complete, current, or error-free.

Technical specifications evolve. Software implementations vary. The information provided should be verified against official specification documents for critical use cases.

Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Use FileDex to process files that contain illegal content under applicable law
• Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract the source code of FileDex beyond what is permitted by law
• Use automated tools to scrape, crawl, or excessively access the service in a way that degrades performance for other users
• Misrepresent FileDex or claim affiliation with us
• Use the FileDex brand, logo, or content without permission

Intellectual Property

Our Content

The FileDex website, including its design, code, format encyclopedia content, visualizations, and documentation, is our intellectual property. You may not reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from our content without permission, except as permitted by applicable law (such as fair use or fair dealing).

Open Standards

FileDex references and cites open standards (RFCs, W3C specifications, ISO standards) and open-source tools (FFmpeg, PDF.js, pdf-lib). These references are for educational purposes. The respective standards bodies and projects retain all rights to their specifications and software.

User-Generated Content

FileDex does not have user accounts, comments, uploads, or any form of user-generated content. There is nothing to license.

Third-Party Services

FileDex uses the following third-party services:

• Vercel — hosting and content delivery
• Umami — privacy-respecting website analytics
• Sentry — error monitoring

These services have their own terms of service and privacy policies. We are not responsible for their practices.

Service Availability

FileDex is a free service. We make reasonable efforts to keep it available but do not guarantee uptime or availability. We may:

• Modify, update, or change features without notice
• Temporarily take the service offline for maintenance
• Discontinue the service at any time

Since FileDex is a Progressive Web App (PWA), core conversion functionality works offline after your first visit, even if our servers are unavailable.

No Professional Advice

Nothing on FileDex constitutes professional, legal, or technical advice. The format encyclopedia is educational content, not a specification itself. For critical applications (archival, legal compliance, medical imaging), consult the relevant official standards and qualified professionals.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Sultanate of Oman. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of FileDex shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of Oman.

If any provision of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Your continued use of FileDex after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms.
